What Will She Be...

We love to visit the bookstore. Lately, we have been able to let the kids choose books on several occasions from the bookstore. Inevitably, Kayla chooses one about doctors, dentists, or hospitals. Not always great literature but definitely of great interest to Kayla. Pictured are some of her choices. This doesn't include books from the library- there are always a few from there, too.
The funny thing about this theme is that it leads you to believe that Kayla just loves the doctor and dentist. After all, she loves to read about them. Play them. Talk about them.
But...no.
While she can be very optimistic and cheerful as we head to one of these medical offices for a visit, when we get there it's a different story. Usually no tears. No screams. Just- non-compliance. Our kind pediatrician told her that he would pray that her stubbornness would turn into perseverance. I agree.
Although I have to give her credit. She has really gotten a lot better since her 4-year check up.
Maybe, Kayla will be a nurse or a doctor or a dentist one day. She says she want to be a "surgery nurse." And, that if kids are scared, she will "tell them that it will be OK." I hope she gets that chance. In the mean time, we will continue to read and learn all about these medical helpers and hope she continues to enjoy her visits with them a little more!

Summer Fun

This has been a great week for family summer fun. We have all enjoyed having Daddy around more while he is in between school and his new job.

Birthday Cereal

I grew up eating "sugar cereal." You know, Fruit Loops, Apple Jacks, Lucky Charms. Mmmm... I still eat it. But now, I eat it at night for my evening snack after the kids are in bed. I can usually sneak it into the grocery cart without it being seen. Occasionally, I am found out. Recently, Jack saw me eating a big bowl of Fruit Loops and promptly reported it to Kayla the next morning. "Kayla! Guess what Mommy eats when we go to bed!"

Now they only get this delightful treat on their birthdays, thus the name "birthday cereal." They can choose whatever kind of cereal they want. Well, this morning I was shopping in Walmart and thought I was choosing Mom's Best Mini-Wheats when what I actually took from the shelf was Mallow-Oats (generic Lucky Charms). Didn't figure that out until I was checking out. When I got home, Kayla immediately spotted the Mallow-Oats through the bag. Her eyes got big and she said, "MOM! Did you buy birthday cereal???" "Yes." I explained why I happened to buy birthday cereal when no one in our family has a birthday in the near future. "Is it for ALL of us?" "I guess it is," I said.

She ran outside to find Jack. "JACK!! Mom bought birthday cereal!" He came running in the house, eyes equally big. "MOM! Did you really buy birthday cereal? Kayla said you bought birthday cereal!" I explained again. Who would have thought something so simple could cause so much excitement!

So, we will all be having Mallow-Oats for breakfast in the morning and enjoying this unexpected treat very much!

Coffee and Conversation

I went to my first book club meeting Tuesday night. We drank coffee and discussed "I Capture the Castle." What a wonderful group of women! What a fantastic book! I'd love to write more about it but my neighbor did it so well (with pictures) that I thought you should just read what she wrote. (OK- I can't figure this link thing out. Just click the word "wrote.")

Summer is here!

Oh my. Summer is here. Kayla and I stepped out this morning and already the air was thick, heavy, and very warm. It reminded me a little of when we first moved to Charlotte. Late July, 2005. Hot, hot, hot. And these downpours every afternoon sometime between 2 and 4. The sun would be shining and all of the sudden it was pouring. Then, the sun would come back out and make things so steamy.
I didn't realize how much we have enjoyed this spring with low humidity and comfortably warm days. We've spent so much time outside-riding bikes, exploring the yard, capturing roly-polys, going to the park, blowing bubbles. I love these days. Knowing they are numbered makes my heart ache a little. Numbered because children grow up too fast. Numbered because the moving date quickly approaches. Even so, we are looking forward to this new chapter. And to cooler weather!!
