A Sweet Day

I'm a little behind on all I could be blogging about.  Well, let's face it, a lot behind and I probably won't get caught up.  Maybe in the next few days...
But today.  What a sweet day it was in our family.  Our little Lucy was baptized into the covenant family this morning.  I love these baptisms as they remind me of God's beautiful promises to His people, of His goodness and loving kindness.  Lucy's was extra special.  She was baptized by her Daddy and though I didn't get teary then I am now.  How sweet to hear him say "Lucy Josephine Waters, I baptize you..."  And do you know, she slept right through it.

Happy Birthday Samuel!

Happy 3rd Birthday Sammy!
I really can't believe this little guy is three today.  Seems like he has grown up so much in the past few months.  I watched the baby in him fade away and be replaced by a little boy who goes potty, plays games, sings "Jesus Loves Me," and change his mind so fast.  I never really know what to expect with Sam.  He's that wonderful mix of fiery and sweet, explosive and funny.  I think as a mother, there will always be that part of my heart that breaks as these children grow and rejoices to watch it happen, all at the same time.  Here he is along the way...

Two Snippets

"Sammy, are you mommy's big boy?"
"No."  (his favorite word by the way)
"Are you my little boy?"
"No."
"Well then who are you?"
"I a man."
Not yet, buddy, not yet.

Lucy had shots today.  She was not happy for the rest of the day and who can blame her?
Jack and I were talking about it as he settled in for the night when he looked at Lucy and said,
"Lucy, if anyone tries that again, I'll punch 'em all the way to China."
What a guy.

Happy 2 Month Birthday Lucy!

  • I can't for the life of me get this picture turned around but it is so cute I had to leave it on anyway!

From Wendell Berry...

"You have consented to time and it is winter.  The country seems bigger, for you can see through the bare trees.  There are times when the woods is absolutely still and quiet.  The house holds warmth.  A wet snow comes in the night and covers the ground and clings to the trees, making the whole world white.  For a while in the morning the world is perfect and beautiful.  You think you will never forget."   from "Hannah Coulter" by Wendell Berry

I just reread Hannah Coulter.  I think it's my favorite book.  Such a beautiful use of language and story.  If you haven't read it, really, you must.

Something Special

"Mom, what can you and me do special?"
"Hmmm...what did you have in mind?"
"Maybe a beauty shop?"
And so she runs to our room and finds my cosmetic bag.  Organizes everything she thinks we'll need.  The little ones are sleeping and so our beauty shop begins.  We make small talk as if we didn't know each other and soon, she's looking quite spiffy, like a puppy of all things!

It seems like so many little girls love to get into their mother's makeup.  I remember one time my mom putting some of her lipstick on me as we were getting ready to go out, to keep my lips from getting chapped.  What a treat that was.  I had this wonderful white powder table growing up that I kept all of my girly things in.  I caught a whiff of my make up bag yesterday and it immediately reminded me of my table.  I probably spent hours in front of that little mirror, primping and dreaming.  It's fun to play with Kayla now, letting her enjoy mommy's things and all the while teaching her that she's at her most beautiful in the Lord who made her.

Slowing Down

It is pouring the snow- again.  From the inside, it is beautiful.  I love to watch it fall.  I love how it so quickly changes everything.  We weren't planning on going out much today, and yet I feel freedom to be home, to slow things down a bit.  We finished some math this morning and a spelling test and are now finding time for other projects, books, an extra cup of coffee.  Interesting how it takes something from the outside to slow me down inside.  I'm reminded of a study some women did this summer on trusting God in all things, even in the weather.
"For to the snow he says, 'Fall on the earth,' likewise to the downpour, his mighty downpour." Job 37:6
This icy picture was from the last snowstorm, after most of the snow had melted but the pond was still frozen.

I noticed Sam hasn't had much face time on the blog lately so here he is in all his "boyness."  He's really something.

And his sweet side...

One more of Lucy.  She's getting so big and sweet.  Jack said he just loves having a baby around.  Kayla says she does too but she's surprised how much they can cry.  Lucy can make a good bit of noise!
